Champ III: Going Places

The adventure starts here.

Day 4 – July 11, 2026 – Rolla, IL to Miami, OK.

We had a little rain this morning between the time Kelso walked the 1st time, about 6:30 and when we left, around 8:00. Lots of clouds and several areas of light sprinkles. We lost them later and the sun was out by about 11:00.

Again small towns but we also had some pretty primitive sections of road. I took a couple pictures on the situation. Fortunately these sections were only a couple mile long and again, there was no traffic to speak of. The roads were narrow and had no center line marking and no shoulders to speak of.

I also took some pictures of some of the towns were went thru. There is also a picture of a Drive-In Movie Theater that I believe was preserved for the Historic Road.

I had some problems with the signage today, but for the most part I was able to backtrack and pickup where I made the mistake. I have to keep in mind that these are not marked like your regular roads that everyone uses. And it would be easier with 2 people in the car, so the passenger can read the driving directions while the driver drives.

One town we passed thru was Webb City, MO. They had a nice Welcome Sign, artistically painted on a building and another sign with a tribute to Route 66 that goes right thru the middle of town. There is a picture of the signage.

We went thru several cities that had old cars parked off the road with eyes in the windshield. I read that this was the inspiration for some of the animated movies that have the vehicles with eyes. I have a picture from Plew, MO. where these cars were.

We stopped in Galena Kansas (the only real town in Kansas on Route 66) at a small park in downtown. They had an artsy mural painted on one side of the Restroom Building That paid tribute to Route 66. I have a picture of that. They also had 3 plaques that were dedicated to various parts of the history of the town.

I have a pictire of the Rainbow Bridge that is listed as a Historic Structure that Route 66 used, it is in Kansas. Route 66 is only in Kansas for 13 miles. The State and the locals have really taken the Route 66 Centennial seriously. But a lot of the preservation had to start many years ago.

Trouble finding a motel at the end of the day. Galena did not have one. They had a kind-of motel except they were looking for longer rentals than a day or 2. so I decided to press forward and not go back and we ended up in Miami, Oklahoma at the Days Inn. Good wifi and gave me the opportunity to catch up on the posts. We still need the picture problem solved.
