Sorry I am late publishing this, but I did not have internet last night.
We got started today at 8:00. The sky was cloudy and the temp was about 60 F. We did not have far to go today. I am trying to pace myself before I get to Oregon. We did get some sun during the middle of the day and that was nice.
We followed the coast for about 60 miles and then Hwy 1 turned North-Northeast. After about 20 miles Hwy 1 ended and we were on Hwy 101 which was a much better road. Hwy 1 was the true coast Hwy following the hills up, down and around. There were switchbacks that had a cautionary sign of 15 mph. The views of the Pacific were very good again but they did get better when the sun came out. There were some areas that were not quite on the coast but in a dense woods, They were so dense the dash light switched to night time mode twice. A lot of the trees were redwoods and some of them were large, maybe 4′ or 5′ diameter, and they were close to the road.
The drive on Hwy 101 was faster as the design was more accommodating. There were still a lot of turns and hills but most of the time you could maintain the 65 mph speed limit. We went thru forested areas but they were not as dense around Hwy 101. The traffic was light for the most part. There are a lot of names on the map, but most of them were parks or beach access points.
Our final destination today was a town called Arcata, CA that is a few mile north of Eureka, CA. As we approached Eureka there was a fog in the sky and the closer we got the denser the fog was around the ground level. The fog never really effected the driving and it was only around the town of Eureka
We spent about 4 hours on the road and I think Kelso enjoyed the shorter day drive. After we were in the motel room, he sacked out for a good afternoon nap.
