We got started about 8. Weather was cloudy and the temps were in the low 60’s. The only time we got to 70 or above was when were we inland somewhat from the Pacific.
Half Moon Bay is about 60 miles from the Golden Gate Bridge. We started on Hwy 1, but with the cloud cover, the ocean views were not as spectacular today. We traveled thru El Granada, Moss Beach, Montara, Pacifica, Westlake and Lakeshore before the road took a serious turn to the east. We were on Hwy 35 at that point and we needed to get back on Hwy 1 to cross the Golden Gate Bridge. Some of the road was narrow with bling turns, but not a lot.
We crossed the Golden Gate Bridge and went past Sausalito and Marin City to again exit on Hwy 1. Right from the start the road was narrow and had a lot of turns but at least the sun came out and when we got to the Pacific the views were spectacular. The water was a nice dark blue with a lighter blue for the sky. The coast area is basically very hilly and the road wind around and up and down the hills. There are very few towns on this route. When I say towns, I am talking about a small area having a population of about 500 to 1,000. Stinson Beach was the first one we went thru, then Point Reyes Station, Tomales, Bodega Bay, Gualala, Mendocino and Fort Bragg. It is a City and not a military base and it’s population is about 7,000.
The scenery today was great with the Pacific views but we also went thru quite a few wooded areas that I believe had redwood trees in them. A little research says yes there are redwood trees along the Pacific Coast in Marin and Sonoma Counties. The trees I saw looked like what I know as redwoods but they were not the massive trees you always see in pictures.
