Well the weather did not look good this morning.  Candy and I went for our first walk and the sun was coming up in the east and the dark clouds were rolling in from the west.  I checked the radar and although there were several little showers around there were no large or threatening weather within a couple of hundred miles.

We departed Brockville and headed West on the Seaway.  Brockville had several 1000 Island Ferries and we could see immediately that we were in the 1000 Island area.  Lots of parks, cottages, boat docks, etc.  A lot of the shore reminded me of the rocky shore up at Fish Camp.

After we were thru the Brockville Narrows the Seaway really opens up and actually splits with a separate Canadian Channel and the Main Seaway Channel on the American side.  The current is down significantly because the overall St Lawrence is a lot wider.

We passed and island with a restored castle, Singer Castle, on it and updated docks for boats to moor to.  I am sure there is a lot of ferry traffic to this site. Further up the Seaway we passed Alexandria Bay and that could be the center of the 1000 islands.  Lots and lots of cottages along with several castles and everything is in pretty good shape or being restored.  Lots of boat traffic and in Alexandria Bay we passed 4 ferries that were starting their trips/tours around the area.

About 5 miles further down the Seaway we came to Clayton, NY.  We couldn’t reach the office but we started to dock in an empty space on the wall but the wind was against us.  Thankfully a couple of locals came over and gave us a hand to get in.

After getting power and water hooked up I went with Candy for a walk to the US Customs video phone in downtown Clayton, only way to check in with Customs.  I had all our paperwork but because of the distance Lenore did not go.  Well the custom’s agent on the other end of the phone said she needed to be there and wouldn’t relent.  I went back to the marina and the marina manager had one of the workers give both of us a ride back to the phone.  I had a different agent on the phone this time.  I asked if the US Custom’s made any provisions to deal with the handicapped because one video phone in Clayton did not seem to fill the bill.  Once she realized that I had called in earlier and what had gone on, she apologized, our report was taken and we were checked in.  I do not think the video phones are that good. I put the passports where I was told so they could be seen over the phone but I needed to read the passport number to her from each passport.

We did get  good tour of Clayton from our marina driver and it is a very nice town that the people take a lot of pride in their homes and maintain them. The business district is all related to the tourist industry.  There is a nice Antique Boat Museum here.  They even have rides on the river in old Chris Craft and Hacker Craft Boats. I need to take some pictures and send them to Keith.

We are about 10 miles from being out into Lake Ontario.  There is supposed to be some thunderstorms for the next couple of days and the winds are up a little from the Southwest so we may be here until the weather settles down.  We plan on travelling to Oswego but that is almost due South of here and I do not want to buck the waves for 40 miles of open water.

We spent a very uncomfortable night.  Winds shifted to Southwest and increased to probably 15 to 20 mph.  The waves were moving the boat noticeably and it was hard to sleep.  After a couple hours the winds then shifted to the Northwest and it quieted down somewhat.  The land configuration of the Burlington bay helped with the Northwest winds. We had a lot of rain overnight also and the sky was pretty gray in the morning.

We got underway pretty early because we wanted to make Rouses Point at the top of the Lake Champlain and I was afraid that with the wind the water would not be kind to us.  I was wrong.  Lake Champlain, for whatever reason, does not appear to kick up big waves.  The wind was out of the Northwest for the most part and the lake is oriented north to south. But the worst the waves were was maybe 2’ in some places.  Not that we were disappointed.

It was pretty quiet on the lake.  We left Burlington just after a car ferry did and we were with him for about 5 or 6 miles on the lake before he put in on the west shore. This part of Lake Champlain is fairly wide and has some islands in the center that almost break it into 2 pieces, an east half and a west half. We stayed on the western portion. Not many buoys on the lake but then when the water is anywhere from 200’ to 350’ deep you can go anywhere you want.

As we got further north we started to see a little thinning in the clouds and actually by the end of the day we had just a peek at the sun.  The wind pretty much stayed for the day.

We stayed at Gaines Marina in Rouses Point.  It is a fairly large marina that is located about 1 mile from the border with Quebec.  There is a US Customs Station just a little north and about 1 ½ miles over the border is a Canadian Customs Station.

Gaines Marina appears to be a very popular spot for Montreal Boaters.  While we are about 100 miles by water from Montreal, it is a 45 minute car ride.  This makes it a great place for the city folk to enjoy Lake Champlain.  About half of the boats in the marina are sailboats and while we were there they probably stepped 6 masts on the sailboats and they started about 6:30 in the morning.

It was a real nice quite night.  Our slip was in the center of the marina and although the wind was still quite strong we did not feel it at all.

We ended up staying at Schuyler’s Yacht Basin an extra day because Lenore was not feeling well and it was a nice place.  Lenore felt better later in the day and we went out to dinner last night. Judy (one of the owners) loaned us her car to use.

We had a lot of rain and they had all kinds of flash flood warnings out when we arrived.  The river level was down about 2′ from normal and once the rain stopped the river started to rise and it came up about 3′.  It is a good thing they had floating docks. The extra water did put some current in the river for our cruise today as all the extra water was going downstream and over the dams at each of the locks.

We left a little before 8:00 this morning as Lock 5, a little over 1 mile away, opened at 8:00.  We had to wait about 10 minutes for the lockmaster to drop the lock to take us up.  Lock 5 was the only lock we had to wait for today and we went thru 6 locks.  All of them had the doors open and were ready for us. Locks 5, 6, 7 and 8 all raised us higher while Locks 9 and 11 lowered us. There is no Lock 10.

The day started gray and the sun finally started to show a little by late morning and we had partly cloudy for most of the afternoon.  The temp only came up to the low 70’s after the sun came out.

It was kind of strange on the water because there were not very many boats.  We passed 1 fishing boat, 1 dredge work boat, 1 pontoon boat and 1 canoe with 2 guys in it.  For a summer weekend the waterway was strangely empty.

As we moved further north the Hudson River started to narrow down.  At Lock 9 we actually left the Hudson River and entered the Champlain Canal.  This was originally started in the early 1800’s and although it is essentially a large ditch that they dug, there are many mature trees along the sides and a good number of them are large pine trees.  The water was a milk chocolate brown from all the rain runoff over the last week.  The Champlain Canal got real narrow in a couple of places and I am not sure that 2 large boats could pass each other in those narrow places.  The depths were never a problem with about 9′ being the least water depth I saw under the boat.

We arrived in Whitehall with hopes of staying at their Municipal Docks because they provide water and power and there is no cost.  There is room for probably 8 to 10 boats but there are only 3 power pedestals and we were the second boat to arrive. We are right behind the Fire Station and the Police Department is right across the street.

There is a nice park on the north side of the Fire Station and when we walked south there was a museum and then a much larger park that had a boat launch at the south end.  I took a picture of the salvaged hull of the USS Ticonderoga that was a wooden schooner in the US Navy in 1814. The hull was raised and salvage back in 1958 and is displayed in the park.  The basic shape od the schooner is there but not a lot else. In the park they also had a wood carving, life size, of Sasquatch, or at least someone’s impression of what he looks like. I took pictures of both of these displays.

Whitehall is also claimed as the birth place of the US Navy. During the American Revolution, the village, Skenesborough (Whitehall’s original name), was captured by American forces in 1774. Benedict Arnold under Philip Schuyler built a fleet of vessels to confront British forces at Valcour Island (thus the claim that this is the birthplace of the US Navy).

Interesting and there were some really nice homes overlooking the river in Whitehall.  We took a picture of the most impressive one.

Tomorrow we have one lock and then probably 20 miles and we will be in Lake Champlain.

Well another gray day but it was not raining when we left Albany.  For the 6  hours we were on the water, we had rain probably for 5 hours.  At least it was a light rain and not a  steady, soaking, rain.

We had 5 locks today starting with the Troy NY Lock that is also known as the Federal Lock (Army Corp of Engineers).  All the other locks are run by the NY Thruways Corporation. The locks were very good today in that there was minimal turbulence as we were going up in all the locks and they need to fill them with millions of gallons of water. We had the doors open on 3 of the 5 and the other 2 were opened while we approached the lock so our lock waiting was minimal.  Probably a lot to be said for the rain.

We had 2 large cruisers with us in the Federal Lock but both of them turned West into the Erie Canal.  The Erie Canal bridges allow a 21′ high boat while the Champlain Canal restriction is 17′ and these 2 looked more than 17′. That made it nice because we were the only boat headed north in the next 4 locks.

There is a lot of dredging going on in this section of the Champlain Canal (as it is called).  It is really the natural section of the Hudson River and the dredging is to remove PCB contaminated soil for the river bottom.  We saw at least 4 dredges on the river besides all the support boats and even a dormitory boat for the crews to sleep. We also saw several southbound barges filled with dredged material.

The river has some development but it might be a stretch to say that 10% of the shore is developed.  They have some crazy speed limits in that they show it as 30 mph but also call for no wake when you are near canal facilities, docks and other boats.  It would be interesting to see how it is enforced on the weekends. These speed limit signs are at each of the locks for boats going in both directions.

The river banks are heavily wooded in the non-developed areas. Everything is very green and growing around here.  They had a bad winter like most other northern states and they are just now getting everything going, about a month behind. I saw on the internet today that Lake Superior is now clear of ice per a statement from the Coast Guard.  I do not think there will be a lot of swimmers this year.

It did stop raining long enough for us to dock at the Schuyler (the Y is silent) Yacht Basin. It is a combination of a marina and an RV park for summer residents.  It is run by Judy and Phil Dean and they have run the operation for 29 years.  Judy admitted that they do not even own a boat but the marina is not that large and the facilities are evenly split between docks and camp sites for the RV’s. The Schuylerville Downtown is 2 blocks from the marina so I will probably visit it tomorrow if the rain lets up.

We had rain on Monday so it was easy to sit in the marina and not go anywhere.  The forecast for today is 60% probability of rain with a potential for thunderstorms in the afternoon.  Actually that is the forecast for the rest of the week. The weather radar looked clear in the morning so we left Kingston for Albany.

It turned out to be sunny with some clouds, high temps and humidity.  There was not much wind but the trip was good and we avoided any rain.

Not much traffic on the river in either direction.  We did pass a couple of sailboats and they were headed north.  There were very few fishermen out so it was really quite on the water.  We passed more tows than we did pleasure boats.

One real neat lighthouse we passed was the Athens-Hudson Lighthouse. It is not in use anymore but they must offer some tours because there was a pontoon boat parked next to it and a few people up in the top of the lighthouse.

We had been to Albany last year and I did an oil change on Champ III there so I wanted to do it again this year. I called the Albany Yacht Club to make a 3 day reservation.  They would be able to accommodate us for 2 days only, so we said OK.

I called the Albany NAPA once we arrived and they had the oil and filters I needed so we were all set.  They delivered everything in the late afternoon so I could do the oil change on Wednesday.

I also spent some time looking at the route up the Hudson River into Lake Champlain and on to the St Lawrence Seaway. Last year we went into the Erie Canal and it was not a real good experience because Mother Nature dumped a lot of rain on the mountains and the Mohawk River Basin. This year we decided to go up thru Lake Champlain to the St Lawrence and down thru the 1000 Island area.

The Harbormaster was really great at the Albany Yacht Club.  He had maps of the Champlain Canal that give the distance and approximate time between the locks.  We have about 8 miles and we go thru our 1st lock and we will be in fresh water again. He also gave us menus for several restaurants, made some recommendations and also invited us to a Club Happy Hour on Wednesday night.

Wednesday was a busy day with the oil change and preparing for a new area to visit on the trip.  I also had to bring out the large round fender balls because we will be in quite a few locks before we get to the St Lawrence and then some on the St Lawrence.  At least we remembered to do all the preparations.

Another cool, clear morning with minimal wind.  Quite a few boats out in the anchorage on the south side of the marina.

We got underway a little after 8:00.  I was not sure  what the currents would be in the river.  High tide was predicted at about 9:30 at Croton on Hudson.  We were pretty fortunate with the current.  We were able to get a positive effect for almost the whole trip north and that was good.

With the good weather we had plenty of locals in the areas of the towns. The locals appear to stay right around the town and we only saw a few venturing up or down river.  Still quite a number of boats moving north.  We passed 2 trawlers that had left Half Moon Bay earlier than us. We also passed “At Last” a large trawler we were docked next to in Cape May.

You can see in the pictures that the wind for the most part was pretty light. This made for good boating conditions for everybody.  We were quite surprised to see tows on the river on Sunday. We passed 3 going south and one going north.

We passed the West Point Military Academy on the west shore of the river.  It is quite an impressive Looking community.  You can see which buildings are from the original granite and limestone construction.  West Point was occupied by the military in 1778 and is the oldest military installation in the US.

As we got nearer to Kingston there was a little breeze from the south.  The sailors were happy and there were sailboats all over the river and it was a little like a slalom course to avoid the sailboats and follow the channel markers.

After rocking at the dock for the last 2 days in Half Moon Bay we decided to go to Kingston. There are several marinas here along with a Maritime Museum and about a mile up the Rondout Creek is the Rondout Yacht Basin.  It was good to see that the sheriff patrol was on the water enforcing the No Wake zones. The water was nice and quite.

The marina was busy and most of the large slips were full.  We had called ahead and they had a slip for us.  The docks are floaters and a little old and wobbly. They appear to maintain the marina but the facility is pretty old.  The seasonal boats here are generally the small boats and there are still a lot of boats on the hard.  Some have been on the hard for a long. long, long time. You can tell that when you see the plastic shrink wrap deteriorating and shredding on the boat.

There are probably 3 boats here that were at Half Moon Bay last night.

They are predicting rain tonight and rain on/off tomorrow.  Actually, other than Wednesday, there is a chance for rain every day this week. Our next stop is Albany.

After several nice days in New York, docktails with friends and celebratory Loop completion dinner with Humbug, Carol Anne and Off Leash, it was time to move north.  The rain of yesterday was over and the sky was clear.

Humbug and Carol Anne were leaving today after us.  Humbug is headed back to Mystic, CT and Carol Anne to New Rochelle, NY.  We did hear them on the VHF radio for awhile.

We started late because of the tide and also we had a problem with a starting battery.  We finally got underway and the 1st 8 miles of the Hudson River is very lumpy because of all the ferry traffic.  We stayed to the west side of the river to get out of the current as much as we could and it helped somewhat with the ferry wake.

The view again was spectacular as we motored up from the Financial Center in Manhattan, past the Bronx.  Once past the George Washington Bridge the water was relatively smooth. The train from points north that brings the daily commuters into NYC runs right along the East bank of the Hudson.  There seems to be a constant stream of trains going by.

We did see some barge traffic on the river.  Most of the pleasure boats were headed North.  We saw Adagio 1, that is a large DeFever trawler headed north.  We had followed Adagio 1 in the Chesapeake-Delaware Canal and he was in front of us on the dock in Delaware City.

We are staying at Half Moon Bay Marina tonight.  It is located by Croton on Hudson, NY.  The reviews are mostly good for the marina.  It was easy getting into the marina and the staff is very helpful.  The big downside was that the wind was out of the northwest and this part of the Hudson River is about 3 miles wide and the outer seawall configuration did not quiet all the waves. we rocked most of the afternoon and evening before the wind quieted down and shifted direction.

Another downer is that the marina is locate immediately adjacent to a large condo complex that does not allow dogs on their grounds.  Some of the marina docks exit on to the condo property and then you walk north to get to the marina office.  We were assigned to their north dock which does not exit onto the condo property.  There is a nice river walk with a city park about 1/2 mile up but they do not allow dogs into the park.  Seems to be a pretty unfriendly place for dogs.

The Marina is pretty well located with all the town amenities reasonably close by. Cab rides into town are not expensive so that helps.  We are going to stay here 2 days before heading North on the Hudson River.

This is a little different.  We did not travel on the water but I am posting about New York City.  We made 2 trips into the City on the ferry. The ferry runs every half hour so it is pretty convenient.

Liberty Landing Marina is Located in the Liberty Landing Park in Jersey City, New Jersey.  Lots of wide open spaces and lots of grass for Candy. Only Founders Park in Islamorada is better than this park.

The 1st day we visited several stores that were on Lenore’s NYC list.  We took cabs everywhere because they were to far to walk. The last shop was a trimmings store with all types of ribbons and decorations to be added to whatever you had in mind.  This was in mid-town on 6th Ave. The pedestrian traffic was incredible but maybe not for a city with 7 million people.

When we got back to Liberty Landing we notice that several of the “Around The World” racing sailboats had left and other appeared to be getting ready to leave.  When Candy and I went for our walk I noticed that Off Leash was tied up in the harbor so we went over to congratulate them on their Loop completion. While we were talking Humbug and Carol Anne came into the outer harbor but had to wait for the remaining racing sailboats to leave.  Once they did, they came into the slips on either side of Off Leash. It was ironic that the slowest of the 3 boats was the first to arrive after 2 days on the water from Cape May.

We had docktails with champagne to celebrate the Loop completions.  Loretta from Carol Anne had even written in the Looper Blog that the 3 boats completed their Loops on the same day at the same location which could be a Looper first.

The rain started during the night and rained on and off until late morning.  Lenore and I went into NYC again by ferry today and took a cab to Little Italy.  Mike from Off Leash had mentioned that Little Italy has been pretty much been taken over by the Chinese and he was not wrong. We visited an Italian Market and an Italian Bakery/Restaurant that were nestled in among the Chinese stores.

Impressions of New York are that there are way too many people and you cannot go anywhere without some kind of road reconstruction going on.  Some of this is probably also the utilities under the street but it is still construction. All the cab drivers have a heavy accent and it is hard to understand them. We did not have one American cab driver in the cabs we took. The views from Liberty Landing of the New York skyline were fabulous.

We went to dinner at the Liberty Landing Restaurant with the new Gold Loopers.  It was a lot of fun and the excitement of the Loop completion had not worn off Loretta yet (that is not a bad thing). Everyone had a good time and everybody, except Off Leash, is leaving tomorrow (6-7-14) and headed for their home ports.  Off Leash is technical in their home territory, NYC.  They have friends coming to visit them.

Ess-Kay Yard Marina, Brewerton, NY to Qswego Marina, Oswego, NY — June 21, 2013

Back on the water again.  The canal has been open for 2 days and we were getting work done.

The props were reconditioned, the shafts were checked, the seacocks on the mains were serviced and the zincs on the hull, shafts and trim tabs were changed. We did a sea trial after all the work was done and the vibration was gone and everything sounded great.

While the work was going on Lenore and I rented a car and went to the Finger Lake area on Wednesday.  We visited Canandiagua Lake, Seneca Lake and Cayuga Lake.  All the lakes are picturesque nestled in the mountains.  Cayuga and Seneca Lakes are connected by canals to the Erie Canal but I am not sure the marinas are suited for a Champ III size boat as the only boats we saw on the lakes were pontoons and runabouts.  The Towns of Canandiagua and Geneva on Seneca Lake were fairly large and had what appeared to be a thriving downtown area.  All the buildings were fairly old but well maintained. Cayuga lake on the other hand appeared to be a bedroom community with a blinker light but the Cayuga Township offices were right on the lake in a park setting.  The lakeside park we stopped at by Canandiagua Lake had some rather unique fishing houses.  They are all lined up next to each other and one side fronts on the water and the other side faces the next row of fish houses. The park we stopped at on Seneca Lake had an ice cream stand that had wine ice cream.  I had a raspberry chardonnay.  First thing you taste is the raspberry and then you taste the chardonnay.  The sign said 5% alcohol.  Check out the pictures we took.

We had 8 locks today between Brewerton and Oswego, but not a lot of mileage, 33 miles.  The locks were all waiting for us with only one where we waited for the lock to come up with a boat and for the boat to leave the lock, maybe 15 minutes.  The weather was great without a lot of wind and sunny all day.  We were in the Oswego Marina by 1:30 so we had the rest of the day in Oswego.

The Oswego Marina is not real large but caters mostly to charter fishing boats.  We were out of place size wise as was the 45 Silverton aft cabin that came in late in the day.  The marina had good access to restaurants and shopping.

Lock 21, New London NY to Ess-Kay Yard Brewerton NY — June 16, 2013

Great morning today, Saturday June 15th.  It was a little chilly but the sun was out and the forecast was great.  The only problem was that we were sitting in a section of the Erie Canal that is closed.  Because of high water and currents they closed the canal from lock 2 to lock 29 and we are at lock 21.

Lady O showed up yesterday.  It was a sunny day and they decided to get 18 miles closer to their destination.  I stand corrected.  Lady O is a 74′ Azimuth Yacht with a height of 20′.  I talked to the Owner yesterday and in a way we knew him.  When Lenore and I first started cruising in the North Channel, 2 of our favorite places were the Sportsman Inn in Killarney and the Okeechobee Lodge located on Fraser Bay at the entrance to Bai Fine, a natural fjord.  We noted at the Sportsman Inn, so many years ago, a 60′ sport fisherman called “Wacky Wheatley from Halifax Nova Scotia.  The Okeechobee Lodge was a great lodge and marina, run by great people.  They had originally built a 1000 slip marina in Midland Ontario and then moved north and built the Okeechobee Lodge and marina.  The owner of Okeechobee, Gorde Blake, passed away unexpectedly and the Lodge ended up going up for sale.  Wacky Wheatley  ended up purchasing the property in 1999 and turned it into a private residence for his family and friends.  He sold it last year and he and his wife live in Jupiter Florida.  He is on his way north to visit with his son on Lake Erie and then head north to the Lodge.  He said he has become a friend of the new Okeechobee owner and he will tell him that we may stop by on our way thru the area.  The Lady O stands for Lady Okeechobee. It has another meaning also but I liked this one.

Back to the present.  I discussed with the Lady O the closed lock situation and that our head tank was getting close to full and we had less than 1/2 tank of water. There are no services at the locks other than a wall to tie up to.  I told Lady O I was going to the lockmaster and see if he could call someone to get us thru locks 21 and 22 to get to Brewerton NY to some marina facilities. Lady O was also having some issues and they would make a call to the Erie Canal Office in Albany to see if there was something they could do.  This discussion took place at 9:00 and by 10:00 we were in the lock going down.

It was a great ride.  We had about 4 miles in the canal to Sylvan Beach after lock 22 and then we were on Lake Oneida.  The lake is approximately 20 miles long and 4 to 5 miles wide and Brewerton is at the west end of the lake. There were a lot of boats on the water and most of them were fishing. The wind was light and there was a small chop but not a problem.

We were at the marina by noon and it was good to get things taken care of.  They had a courtesy car so I was able to go and do laundry and get groceries.

I am going to have the boat pulled on Tuesday to have the shafts checked.  We have a vibration in the starboard side when the boat is in gear.  The Ess-Kay Yard where we are staying has a good reputation and they seem very competent. Anyway we will be here for a few days and currently the canal is closed and thunderstorms are predicted for late this morning and this afternoon with another 1/2” of rain so the canal probably will not open for a few more days.
